All our physicians are board-certified

Because they possess unique skills and knowledge they are qualified to provide comprehensive medical care, health maintenance, and preventative services to each family member regardless of sex, age, or type of problem, be it biological, behavioral or social.

Thomas I. Anderson, M.D.

Board-certified Medical Doctor

Dr. Anderson began living and practicing medicine in West Knoxville in 1978. He received his medical degree from the Wayne State University School of Medicine and served his residency training in family medicine at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, VA, and is board certified by the American Board of Family Practice. He is one of the founding members of Summit Medical Group. He is the Managing Partner for Summit Medical Group at Deane Hill and Summit Medical Group at Northshore, and is available to see patients at both locations.

Leonard F. Bellingrath, M.D.

Board-certified Medical Doctor

Dr. Bellingrath, a native of Arkansas, began his family medical practice in Knoxville in 1988. He received his medical degree from the University of Arkansas College of Medicine and served his residency at the University of Tennessee, Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. He is board certified by the American Board of Family Practice. He is available to see patients at both our Deane Hill and Northshore offices.

Matthew Bessom, M.D.

Board-certified Medical Doctor

Dr. Bessom is an Athens, Tennessee native who is excited to be returning home to practice medicine. He graduated from McMinn County High School and completed a bachelors degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, finishing Summa Cum Laude. He received his Medical Degree from the James H. Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University and moved to Greenville, South Carolina with his wife to complete his internship in Family Medicine and residency in Internal Medicine. He has been working the past four years as an Internal Medicine Hospitalist and is board certified in Internal Medicine.

His primary interests are in chronic disease management such as diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol, heart failure and COPD as well as cardiovascular risk reduction. Having been in the hospital for four years, he is excited about establishing relationships with his patients and their families.

Dr. Bessom and his wife (a pediatrician) have three beautiful children who are thrilled to be closer to their grandparents. He enjoys anything associated with family time, church activities, music, reading, golfing, the Great Smoky Mountains and UT Football.

Luke Chesney, M.D.

Board-certified Medical Doctor

Dr. Chesney is a Knoxville native who is grateful to be back in his hometown practicing family medicine in a community that he loves. A graduate of Bearden High School, he received his undergraduate degree in Philosophy and Religion from Samford University. Additionally, Dr. Chesney spent a year studying modern Christian literature at Duke Divinity School before ultimately pursuing his career in medicine. He attended the James H. Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University, eventually returning to Knoxville to complete his internship and residency training at University of Tennessee Medical Center.

Dr. Chesney and his wife have three energetic children (two daughters and a son). When he is not busy seeing patients, chasing his children around, or attending UT sporting events, he can usually be found enjoying the quiet of his back porch. He is available to see patients of all ages at both our Deane Hill and Northshore locations.

Jonathan Dee Jr., M.D.

Board-certified Medical Doctor

Dr. Jonathan Dee, raised in Knoxville, joined Summit Medical Group in August of 2007. He graduated from Carson Newman College with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and received his medical degree from the James H. Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, TN. He completed his internship and residency at the Spartanburg Regional Family Medicine Residency Program in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Dr. Dee is certified by the American Board of Family Practice.

Dr. Dee is married to a local pediatrician with whom he has four beautiful children. Dr. Dee enjoys riding his road bicycle in the hills of East Tennessee. He takes particular pleasure in coaching patients along as they work to lead a healthier lifestyle. It is also important to him to take the time to listen to the concerns of his patients and to work out a reasonable, logical plan of action to address those issues. Dr. Dee focuses on the personal aspects of patient care, including communicating laboratory and diagnostic test results. He is available to see patients of all ages at both our Deane Hill and Northshore locations.

Emily Edwards, D.O.

Board-certified Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine

Dr. Edwards is originally from Charleston, SC. She obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado- Boulder, in Kinesiology and Applied Physiology. She then moved back south and attended the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, VA, graduating with honors.

She met her husband, a TN native, while in medical school in Blacksburg. They moved to Knoxville to complete internship and residency training at the University of Tennessee.

While in residency, they both fell in love with Knoxville and have decided to call it home. Dr. Edwards enjoys all aspects of family medicine, but has special interests in women health and preventative medicine.

She has an 18 month old daughter, 2 dogs and a cat and enjoys outdoor activities, cooking and enjoying the many activities Knoxville has to offer such as the Market Square Farmers Market.

Benjamin Huff, M.D.

Board-certified Medical Doctor

Dr. Benjamin Huff joined Summit Medical Group in August of 2013. He is originally from Oneida, TN where he grew up the son of a community family physician. He graduated from the University of Tennessee Knoxville with a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology and received his medical degree from University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, TN.

Dr. Huff returned home to East Tennessee to complete his internship and residency training in Knoxville at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Family Medicine.

Dr. Huff and his wife, a kindergarten teacher, currently reside in Blount County and have 2 boys. He enjoys a variety of outdoor activities and home renovation as well as spending time with his family and cheering on the Vols.

Adam Lett, M.D.

Dr. Adam Lett joined Summit Medical Group in August of 2014. Besides a few childhood years spent in Athens, TN, he has always called Knoxville home. He graduated from Berry College in Rome, GA with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Chemistry and earned his medical degree from The University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis. Dr. Lett returned to Knoxville for his residency training at The University of Tennessee Medical Center in Family Medicine.

Dr. Lett most enjoys quality time spent with his wife, Jennifer, and son, Caleb. Some of his hobbies include hiking, going to the lake, activities at church, and all things UT sports.

J. Craig Rylands, M.D., FAAFP

Board-certified Medical Doctor

Dr. Craig Rylands was born and raised in the Chicago suburbs and moved to Knoxville in 1974 to do his family practice residency. He graduated from The University of Illinois at Champagne-Urbana and received his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. In 1977 he completed a three year family practice residency at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He has been in private practice since 1977. Dr. Rylands is Board Certified by the American Board of Family Practice and is a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Dr. Rylands is married and has two married children and three grandchildren with whom he spends much of his spare time. An avid golfer, he also enjoys spectator sports (Go Vols!). He listens to many kinds of music and has been a Knoxville Symphony Orchestra subscriber for 30 years.

Dr. Rylands currently cares for patients of all ages including children, adults, and patients of geriatric age. He has a special interest in orthopedics and diabetes and is available to see patients at both our Deane Hill & Northshore locations.

Jonathan Smeltzer, D.O.

Board-certified Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine

Dr. Smeltzer is a Knoxville native who is grateful for the opportunity to return to his hometown to practice family medicine. A graduate of Central High School, he received his undergraduate degree in Exercise Science and Psychology from The University of Tennessee. He then attended The Via College of Osteopathic Medicine at Virginia Tech before moving to Columbia, SC to complete his internship and residency training at The University of South Carolina. Where, during his final year of training, he served as Chief Resident.

A third generation UT graduate, Dr. Smeltzer is excited to bring his wife and three-year-old daughter to this wonderful community. When he is not busy seeing patients or playing with his daughter, this outdoor enthusiast can usually be found hiking, camping, attending UT sporting events, and riding his road bike on the rolling hills of Downtown and West Knoxville.

Lee. E. Bert Toney, M.D.

Board-certified Medical Doctor

A native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Dr. Toney performed his undergraduate studies at Louisiana State University and received his medical degree from L.S.U. School of Medicine in New Orleans. He completed his internship and residency at Earl K. Long Memorial Hospital in Baton Rouge. He practiced Emergency Medicine in Knoxville for 19 years, eleven of which were spent as the Medical Director of the Emergency Department at Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center. He is certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. He is available to see patients at both our Deane Hill and Northshore offices.

“I have been married since 1976. I have 3 children, the oldest of which is a physician in training to be a nuclear medicine specialist. My second daughter is a nurse at Atlanta Children’s Hospital emergency Department. My son is finishing in civil engineering at University of Tennessee.”

“My hobbies include exercising, with dual benefits of physical conditioning and sense of emotional well-being, sailing, woodworking, snow skiing, bicycling, and hiking. I enjoy performing yard work and have often said that when I tell my wife, I am not willing to cut the grass anymore; she can find me a place in the nursing home. I am in the process of trying to learn to play the guitar. If you could hear me play, you would know that it is a work in progress.”

Mallory Trevino, M.D.

Board-certified Medical Doctor

Dr. Mallory Trevino joined Summit Medical Group in August of 2014.

She is a native Knoxvillian. She graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville with a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and received her medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, LA. After medical school, Dr. Trevino returned home to East Tennessee to complete her internship and residency training in Knoxville at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Family Medicine.

Dr. Trevino is recently married to her husband, Gus. She enjoys walking her dog, Macy, going out on the lake, and spending time with friends and family. Of course, she is a Vol for Life and loves cheering on the Big Orange!

Armand C. Wood, M.D.

Board-certified Medical Doctor

Dr. Wood was raised locally here in West Hills and has been practicing family medicine in West Knoxville since 1998. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and his medical degree from East Tennessee State University, James H. Quillen College of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency at East Carolina University of Medicine. He is certified by the American Board of Family Practice and Diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice.

He is married and has two children. He enjoys coaching his children’s sports teams, hiking, camping, jogging, and fly fishing in both fresh and saltwater.

His practice focuses on improving the health of young adults and families. He enjoys helping his patients with both urgent problems and preventative care and is available to see patients at both of our convenient locations.
