Because they possess unique skills and knowledge they are qualified to provide comprehensive medical care, health maintenance, and preventative services to each family member regardless of sex, age, or type of problem, be it biological, behavioral or social.

Matthew Bessom, M.D.

Board-certified Medical Doctor

Dr. Bessom is an Athens, Tennessee native who graduated from McMinn County High School and completed a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, finishing Summa Cum Laude. He received his Medical Degree from the James H. Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of South Carolina Internal Residency Program in Greenville, South Carolina. He is board certified in Internal Medicine.

Dr. Bessom and his wife have four children and reside in Blount County. He enjoys farm life with his family, church activities, music, reading, the Great Smoky Mountains and UT athletics.

His primary practice interests are in chronic disease management such as diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, heart failure, COPD, cardiovascular risk reduction as well as preventative care and office-based procedures. He is available to see patients age 16 and older at both of our convenient locations.

Luke Chesney, M.D.

Board-certified Medical Doctor

Dr. Chesney is a Knoxville native who is grateful to be back in his hometown practicing family medicine in a community that he loves. A graduate of Bearden High School, he received his undergraduate degree in Philosophy and Religion from Samford University. Additionally, Dr. Chesney spent a year studying modern Christian literature at Duke Divinity School before ultimately pursuing his career in medicine. He attended the James H. Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University, eventually returning to Knoxville to complete his internship and residency training at University of Tennessee Medical Center.

Dr. Chesney and his wife have three energetic children (two daughters and a son). When he is not busy seeing patients, chasing his children around, or attending UT sporting events, he can usually be found enjoying the quiet of his back porch. He is available to see patients of all ages at both our Deane Hill and Northshore locations.

Jonathan Dee Jr., M.D.

Board-certified Medical Doctor

Dr. Jonathan Dee, raised in Knoxville, joined Summit Medical Group in August of 2007. He graduated from Carson Newman College with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and received his medical degree from the James H. Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, TN. He completed his internship and residency at the Spartanburg Regional Family Medicine Residency Program in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Dr. Dee is certified by the American Board of Family Practice.

Dr. Dee is married to a local pediatrician with whom he has four beautiful children. Dr. Dee enjoys riding his road bicycle in the hills of East Tennessee. He takes particular pleasure in coaching patients along as they work to lead a healthier lifestyle. It is also important to him to take the time to listen to the concerns of his patients and to work out a reasonable, logical plan of action to address those issues. Dr. Dee focuses on the personal aspects of patient care, including communicating laboratory and diagnostic test results. He is available to see patients at both our Deane Hill and Northshore locations.

Emily Edwards, D.O.

Board-certified Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine

Dr. Edwards is originally from Charleston, SC. She obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado- Boulder, in Kinesiology and Applied Physiology. She then moved back south and attended the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, VA, graduating with honors.

She met her husband, a TN native, while in medical school in Blacksburg. They moved to Knoxville to complete internship and residency training at the University of Tennessee.

While in residency, they both fell in love with Knoxville and have decided to call it home. Dr. Edwards enjoys all aspects of family medicine but has special interests in women’s health and preventative medicine.

She has two daughters, and enjoys outdoor activities, cooking, and enjoying the many activities Knoxville has to offer such as the Market Square Farmers Market.

Robert Ford, MD

Board-certified Medical Doctor

Dr. Robert V. Ford III is a native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina where he attended Wake Forest University for his undergraduate degree, majoring in history. Dr. Ford always aspired to become a physician like his father and attended Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He and his family moved to Knoxville in 2016 to complete his residency at The University of Tennessee Medical Center in Family Medicine, where he served as Chief Resident in his final year.

Dr. Ford and his wife, Caitlin Torney, live in Knoxville with their two sons and two dogs. The family enjoys exploring Knoxville and can be found at the downtown farmer’s market on the weekends, at a local park, or looking for treasures at antique stores in the area.

Jason French, MD

Board-certified Medical Doctor

After completing his undergraduate work in his hometown of Knoxville at the University of Tennessee, Dr. French elected to pursue his medical degree at ETSU’s Quillen College of Medicine. Quickly becoming rooted in the beautiful surroundings of the Tri-Cities, Dr. French completed his residency training in Bristol.  He had the privilege of caring for patients at two hospital and physician-owned groups.  He is now excited, however, to finally return home to Knoxville after eight years of outpatient experience. He enjoys learning the stories of the families that he cares for and being an integral part of their physical, spiritual, and emotional health. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the CMDA, and certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.

Outside of medicine, Dr. French likes to spend quality time with his wife and young children. He also enjoys fishing, hiking, traveling, and cooking.

Benjamin Huff, M.D.

Dr. Benjamin Huff joined Summit Medical Group in August of 2013. He is originally from Oneida, TN where he grew up the son of a community family physician. He graduated from the University of Tennessee Knoxville with a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology and received his medical degree from University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, TN.

Dr. Huff returned home to East Tennessee to complete his internship and residency training in Knoxville at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Family Medicine.

Dr. Huff and his wife, a kindergarten teacher, currently reside in Blount County and have three boys. He enjoys a variety of outdoor activities and home renovation as well as spending time with his family and cheering on the Vols.

Dr. Adam Lett joined Summit Medical Group in August of 2014. Besides a few childhood years spent in Athens, TN, he has always called Knoxville home. He graduated from Berry College in Rome, GA with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Chemistry and earned his medical degree from The University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis. Dr. Lett returned to Knoxville for his residency training at The University of Tennessee Medical Center in Family Medicine.

Dr. Lett most enjoys quality time spent with his wife, Jennifer, and their daughter and two sons. Some of his hobbies include hiking, going to the lake, activities at church, and all things UT sports.

Jonathan Smeltzer, D.O.

Board-certified Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine

Dr. Smeltzer is a Knoxville native who is grateful for the opportunity to return to his hometown to practice family medicine. A graduate of Central High School, he received his undergraduate degree in Exercise Science and Psychology from The University of Tennessee. He then attended The Via College of Osteopathic Medicine at Virginia Tech before moving to Columbia, SC to complete his internship and residency training at The University of South Carolina. Where, during his final year of training, he served as Chief Resident.

A third-generation UT graduate, Dr. Smeltzer, and his family are excited to be part of this wonderful community. When he is not busy seeing patients or playing with his three daughters, this outdoor enthusiast can usually be found hiking, camping, attending UT sporting events, and riding his road bike on the rolling hills of Downtown and West Knoxville.

Lauren Thoma, M.D.

Board-certified Medical Doctor

Dr. Lauren Thoma grew up in Louisiana and Texas and obtained her undergraduate degree from Centenary College of Louisiana, where she played Division I women’s soccer for 4 years. She graduated with a degree in neuroscience and a minor in psychology, then attended medical school at Louisiana State University Health in Shreveport.

She and her husband, Thomas, who is also from Louisiana, were thrilled to move to Knoxville to complete her family medicine residency at the University of Tennessee. She enjoyed her time at UT and was a Chief Resident in her final year of training. She and her husband truly enjoyed their time in Knoxville for residency and are excited to make it their new home.

She has one son and another child on the way. They have one dog, Bella, and enjoys taking her to the various parks around the city. They also spend their time hiking in the beautiful Smoky Mountains, as well as enjoying all the festivals, music, sports, and outdoor activities that Knoxville has to offer.

Dr. Thoma practices full spectrum family medicine with special interests in women’s health, diabetes, hypertension, and preventative care.

Mallory Trevino, M.D.

Dr. Mallory Trevino joined Summit Medical Group in August of 2014.

She is a native Knoxvillian. She graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville with a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and received her medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, LA. After medical school, Dr. Trevino returned home to East Tennessee to complete her internship and residency training in Knoxville at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Family Medicine.

Dr. Trevino and her husband, Gus, and their son enjoy walking their dogs, going out on the lake, cooking, and spending time with friends and family. Of course, Dr. Trevino is a Vol for Life and loves cheering on the Big Orange!

T.D. Williams, D.O.

Board-certified Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine

Dr. T.D. Williams, originally from Cape Coral, Florida, came to Knoxville in 1988 to attend The University of Tennessee and has called Knoxville home for the past 30 years. Prior to becoming a physician, Dr. Williams served the public for 19 years as a firefighter/paramedic and Flight Medic for UT LifeStar. He earned his medical degree from Lincoln Memorial University’s DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his residency at The University of Tennessee Medical Center in Family Medicine, serving as Chief Resident during his final year.

Dr. Williams and his wife, Jennifer, a high school English teacher, have three active children who keep them busy with rodeos/barrel racing, football, basketball, and dance competitions. Dr. Williams and his family enjoy spending time together – working in the garden, riding horses, fishing, being on the lake, and attending UT sporting events.

Armand C. Wood, M.D.

Dr. Wood was raised locally here in West Hills and has been practicing family medicine in West Knoxville since 1998. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and his medical degree from East Tennessee State University, James H. Quillen College of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency at East Carolina University of Medicine. He is certified by the American Board of Family Practice and Diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice.

He is married to his high school sweetheart and has two grown children. He enjoys sailing, cycling, traveling, and fly fishing in both fresh and saltwater. He enjoys helping his patients with both urgent problems and Prevention of disease. He is available to see patients at both of our convenient locations.
